Family Fun

 Old Toys

Some types of fun are passed on from generation to generation. My mom was always one for keeping things. When I would visit the house where she grew up, I very carefully played with her old dolls and stuffed animals. There's something special about playing with the toys your parents played with, and
imagining your parents as children.
After I grew up and moved away from home, my
mom packed up all my old toys and put them in storage. After I had my own children she gradually brought the toys out that the kids were old enough to play with. Eventually she created a play room of 2 generations of old toys. This became a special
treat when the kid's would visit "Grammy & Gramps"; they got to play with the old toys.
Toy companies are always creating new toys, but sometimes the old one were better. While I was growing up I would get pieces of "Petite Princess" doll house furniture for birthdays and Christmas to add to my collection. Gradually over time I made my own doll house out of cardboard boxes. This was my favorite toy because I could spend hours rearranging, redecorating and playing.

When I shared this favorite toy with my children they also spent hours "making" a doll house; but they used an old book shelf. That was very convenient because all the pieces could be stored like that at the grandparents house, only to be played with on special occasions. Perhaps they will even last for another generation.

Have you shared your old toys with your children?

What was your favorite toy as a child?
